Bowls, Books, and Baubles

July 14th, 2016

Home décor can be both tedious and overwhelming. Our homes are empty canvases
from the start with bookshelves and walls all to be filled. With all of these blank spaces, the question on many of our minds is how to fill up our homes with both beauty and personal reflections.

This week we sat down with Alex Wood, who owns her own interior design firm, Alexandra Wood Design, out of Madison. Her designs mix both old and new pieces to create harmonious spaces that reflect her clients. A firm believer in personal representations, she steers her designs away from trends and focuses on pieces that in her words, her client “will totally love.”

As Alex finds her design aesthetic in layering, she believes items like books are an amazing addition to a room’s décor. From titles to content, books are easy ways to bring personal panache into the space, along with great style. Adding things like an orchid to a beautiful bowl turn a piece of pottery into a centerpiece. And using big or small trays can be layered beautifully at just about any spot in the home. In searching for books, bowls, and baubles to fill the home with, Alex pulls many décor items from online. There, you can find both new and vintage, as well as inspiration. For smaller treasures, Alex heads over to Fontaine, located on East Johnson Street. But in any stage of decorating, Alex gives fundamental design advice: “interior design isn’t instant, and it shouldn’t be.” Take time with your home, let things come together naturally; patience will lead to spaces that are both beautiful and will truly feel like a home you would want to live in.
