The center of the Isthmus
Created by Lakes Mendota and Monona, downtown Madison is home to the
state Capitol and the University of Wisconsin.
Closely resembling the Washington D.C. State Capitol, the Wisconsin State Capitol is the centerpiece of the city. From summer Concerts on the Square every Wednesday night to saturday mornings at the Dane County Farmers’ Market, downtown residents have access to the best restaurants, shops and views in Madison.
A healthy mix of professionals, students, empty-nesters and families all find a place to live downtown. With the campus intertwined with the city, Badger pride runs deep; and, everyone finds an excuse to enjoy a beer on the Memorial Union Terrace during the cherished warm months. The most active and energetic area, living downtown Madison means eating out, enjoying musicals and concerts and staying active on the lakeshore paths of Mendota and Monona.
As the tech boom continues to grow downtown, so does the demand for luxury, high-rise apartments and condos. Condos can be found for $150,000 to $2 million and suit everyone from young professionals to older couples downsizing after their kids move out. Options range from rehabbed historic buildings like The Loraine and Doty School to modern structures like the Marina and Capitol West. Though few and far between, there are single family homes downtown. While the current market is low in inventory, the more expensive condos and penthouses tend to linger on the market longer than the less expensive ones which go fairly quickly.
