August 21st, 2013

It may be back to school time, but summer isn't over yet! There are still lots of fun things to do in and around Madison. Even better than that, many of the options have a philanthropic bent to them, too. We've highlighted three of them below. So go out there and enjoy these dog days of summer!

BIKE THE BARNS

The 7th Annual Bike the Barns is scheduled for Sunday, September 15, 2013.

FairShare’s spectacular fundraising bicycle tour that features local farms and local food!
When you participate in Bike the Barns, you not only enjoy a day biking to local farms and eating artisan delicacies, but you also support our community’s health — the health of our neighbors, our land, our farmers, and our local economies.

Proceeds from this event benefit FairShare’s Partner Shares Program, which helps low-income families purchase local, organic vegetables and have a direct connection with their food and farm through community supported agriculture.
We’re riding to make sure all of our neighbors have access to fresh, healthy food!

For more information and to sign up or sponsor a rider, visit the FairShare CSA website.

CLEAN LAKES ALLIANCE: FORE LAKES

Friday, September 20, 2013 at Blackhawk Country Club

Friends of Clean Lakes will be holding a fundraiser golf event at Blackhawk Country Club. In the last several years, Blackhawk Country Club has made significant improvements in making the golf course more sustainable and reducing runoff. We are excited to partner with them for this event.

An exceptional golf experience awaits all who have the opportunity to play the course, and part of what makes the course so special are the natural plantings and lovely views of nearby Lake Mendota. The plantings help attract wildlife and at the same time help prevent stormwater runoff–thereby helping to keep Lake Mendota protected.

Some of their other actions include utilizing best management practices to minimize chemical usage, installing an impressive three level water garden on the 13th hole, and mulching all of the leaves they pick up in the fall. All these steps help Lake Mendota. Blackhawk is also in the 4th year of a Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary Program and will soon be certified for their efforts at making the course friendly for creatures other than golfers. Mark your calendars now and call some golfing friends, it’s going to be a great time at a great course!
