Make the most of fall in Madison
November 13th, 2015
As I write this, the wind is blowing the recently raked leaves into a lovely whirl and the narrowing blue sky is losing it’s fruitless battle against the grey clouds. We had a good run weather-wise this fall, Madison, but now there is definitely a chill in the air. So what are we to do? I say let’s give in. Let’s retreat inside where it’s warm and cozy and gratefully accept the refuge of home. Why not? We work so hard to find the perfect house, and when we do we spend countless hours and dollars lovingly maintaining and decorating it. So instead of looking at the impending cold as an unfortunate part of life in Wisconsin, let’s embrace it. Let’s be thankful for the opportunity to slow down and enjoy what the Dutch call gezelligheid – a warm, cozy feeling brought on by simple things like spending time with loved ones around the fire.
How do you create a gezellig moment of your own? Allow us to help. We’ve gathered the necessary ingredients below for a cozy night in front of the fire. You’ll have to supply the fireplace, but we’ve got the rest covered.
An evening in front of the fire is elevated by the simple addition of a warm drink. Tea works, of course, but if you’re looking for something with a little more bite, here are two recipes for you:

A WARM THROW
It’s the time of year when your favorite throw is no longer just an accent piece. It’s something you dream of on your drive home. We’ve found a few that not only look good, but will keep you happily warm and blissed out (especially if the mulled wine or bourbon cider are involved) as you linger on the sofa.
A GOOD MOVIE
We know taste in movies is rather subjective. Here’s a few of our picks from Netflix this November.
- The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (a celebration of life)
- Shall We Dance (the original Japanese version)
- The Secret of Kells (celtic mythology suitable for both adults & kids)
- Moonrise Kingdom (Wes Anderson’s sublime adventure)
- To Kill a Mockingbird (classic!)
- Big Fish (another feel-good, quirky film that tugs at the ehart)
- Chocolat (Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche. Enough said.)
- Cinema Paradiso (an enchanting film about one fictional director’s love of the movies.)
We put together this “Cozy Inside” playlist on Spotify for you. (Spotify is free to join if you’re not already a member.)
You’ve got everything you need. Now go stoke the fire and enjoy your night in!
