Many around the world view the lighting of the tree at Rockefeller Center in New Tork City to be the official Christmas kick-off. And it's no wonder. The Norway spruce sports 30,000 LED lights, 5 miles of wire and a Swarovski crystal as a tree topper. Pretty impressive, I'd say. If you can't go to NYC to see the tree in person, NBC is showing the lighting ceremony during a holiday special 11/30 at 7pm, featuring Tony Bennett, Michael Bublé and Cee Lo Green among others.
But if you care to celbrate the holidays closer to home, the Madison area has plenty to offer. We've gathered our own list of favorites for you to pick and choose from as you make your merry way through this most festive of seasons. You can start with Wisconsin's very own tree lighting at the Capitol. The tree, a 40 ft Wisconsin-grown Balsam fir may not have five miles of wire, but it does have an impressive 700 ft of gold garland, 2400 LED lights and best of all, 1400 ornaments hand-made by Wisconsin's very own citizens. The Capitol tree lighting takes place Saturday, 12/3 at 11:45am in the Capitol Rotunda. Here are some other ways to celebrate the season:
